Some months, you live a normal- ish life with a normal- ish schedule. Other months, it may feel like you never see your partner at all! If you let it, a medical residency can take a very negative toll on your relationship. Keep in mind that these are scenarios that work for us. Most residency programs if not all host activities to promote a sense of community among staff and encourage a positive work life balance. In addition to activities that are coordinated by the program, look out for other residency related events like when the job recruiters start inviting them to dinners or when individual residents host personal celebrations or parties. Personally, I really enjoy attending these events.

When Victoria Pham, DO, walked into the orthopedics on-call room by accident in East Meadows, New York, she met the man who would propose to her in Tuscany less than a year later. And although Tim Tsai, DO, a family medicine resident in Summit, New Jersey, recently ended a nine-month long-distance courtship, he is more empowered because of the experience. He advises residents to be mindful of what a relationship reveals about themselves. What these three residents have in common is a willingness to make room in their hectic schedules for relationships, some that even blossomed into love.
Find out what worked for these couples and learn how romance can be a priority in residency. Tsai says. Understanding yourself is a skill and you have to keep practicing. As a family medicine resident, Dr. Pham was surprised to get assistance from Kevin Kim, DO, a third-year orthopedics resident, who rushed to her side to help her lift a patient onto the bed in a CT room. Months later, they reconnected at a happy hour and recalled the story of their accidental meeting and his unexpected assistance.

5 Things They Don’t Tell You About Dating A Medical Resident
Sometimes you will be asked to specify the place of domicile—also called legal residency—of yourself or someone you know for legal purposes. However, when someone has traveled a lot, has multiple homes, is in the military, is a minor, or is mentally incompetent, this can get a little tricky to figure out. While states differ somewhat in how they define the place of domicile, the general rule of thumb can be stated as follows: the domicile is the place a person regards as his or her true home, and where they maintain the most economic, social, political, and family ties.
Military personnel and college students are the most common examples.
Permanent residence date. You need to know the date your permanent residency started. The date depends on if you were in or outside Australia.
Dating is pretty daunting. Dating someone in a surgical residency program or really, ANY residency is something of a myth. Surgeon and I met during his 2nd year of residency. I seriously had no idea what I was getting into back then. After my first formal date with Surgeon, it got not-so-formal. More dinner dates happened at the hospital than anywhere else. In the end, your where-to-have-a-date question should be: where can I spend the most time with this person?
And then, DO IT, no matter how weird it seems. I mean, yes, it is. By the first month, I knew a dinner date meant me cooking, packing and cleaning up afterwards only to spend 30 minutes eating with Surgeon. I was willing to give it that time. Of course not!
Tip After my first formal date about Surgeon, it got not-so-formal. More dinner dates happened at the hospital than anywhere else.
Upon admittance to the University of California, your resident or nonresident classification is determined for purposes of tuition and fees only after you have completed and submitted a Statement of Legal Residence SLR to the campus residence deputy. If you are not a California resident when you enroll, and you remain a dependent undergraduate, it is unlikely that you will be able to qualify as a California resident for purposes of tuition while you’re an undergraduate at UC.
For example, a person who is a California resident for tax or voting purposes will not necessarily be a resident for purposes of tuition. Admissions definitions of residence also differ. They do not confer residence for purposes of tuition. You do not become a resident for purposes of tuition simply by living in California for days or more.
The length of time you attend the University of California or live in California is not the sole determining factor of residency. If you are in possession of a nonimmigrant visa, it is unlikely that you will be able to establish residence in California for purposes of tuition. If your parents live outside of California and you are financially independent, you must also be able to verify financial independence for the two full years preceding the term for which you’re seeking residence classification.

High on Drummond’s list was planning a date night every other week with your significant other. Don’t have a special someone? Drummond.
Three years ago I hit the jackpot. I had recently moved back stateside from an extended stint living abroad in New Zealand. The social scene was pretty scant in the outer suburbs of Detroit so I did what any Millennial would do — I went online dating. After a couple months of meeting the nicest weirdos in southeastern Michigan I happened to find my now soon-to-be wife Emily on OK Cupid. At first she would only see me on Sunday afternoons.
Naturally I assumed there were other squires keeping her entertained on Fridays and Saturdays. Being a third string date was less than ideal. As it turns out, she was in the middle of her third year of medical school. What a perfect time to start dating someone, I thought. Here she was, smart, sweet, beautiful, funny AND less than two years away from being a doctor. After I finished giving myself high fives, I came to realize that being a third year medical student meant that, aside from the hours we had together each week, virtually all of her time was spent at the hospital or studying.
Needless to say, my dreams of being the pampered husband of a wealthy family medicine resident quickly evaporated. To say third year was tough is an understatement.

Aubyn, Some Hope. When I took a job as a residency coordinator in graduate medical education at a local community hospital, I made myself a promise: I will not date a resident. I held out for four years. The residents and I were the same age: they were smart and engaged; I was social and insightful, just far enough inside their world to understand it, but far enough outside not to be consumed by it.
Soon some of them became dear friends. My now-partner, Evan, was one of the quiet ones. He was sloshed to the gills that night, but funny and clever and open. We talked, pressed against the sticky bar, and he spent the next week haunting my office. That was two years ago. That was before I spent two years in the intimate company of a proverbial soldier on the front lines.
